RB25 conversion Stage 7 - Rebuild the cylinder head
I rebuilt the cylinder head today (less the camshafts). I started by fitting the new valve stem oil seals. To do this, first the seals need a coting of engine oil. Place the seals on to the guides using a pair of needle nose pliers. Then find a socket that fits snugly over the top of the seal (10mm was the right size for me) and put an extension bar on the socket. I used a rubber mallet to gently tap the seals on to the valve guides using the socket and extension. Go very gently with this, and make sure the socket is square on the valve seal before tapping home.
Next job is refitting all the valves. To do this give the valve a thin coating of oil along the stem, then gently push it through the guide and seal onto it's seat. Then put the spring and retainer in place (making sure the spring is the right way up) and use a spring compressor to push the retainer over the valve stem.
Get hold of some lithium grease, a small flat-ended screwdriver and the valve collets. Apply some grease to a collet and gently press it into place on the valve stem. Once both collets are correctly seated gently uncompress the spring and the collets should be seated squarely in the retainer. Job done! Now repeat 24 times...
Here's all the valves back in the head...
